Dr. Erickson is a Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery. He received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota and completed his residency training in neurosurgery at the same institution. Dr. Erickson's clinical expertise and research interests focus on the spinal cord. He has been involved in the development of a percutaneous spinal cord cooling system, and the treatment of spinal cord injury with cephalad cooling and the cephalad introduction of spinal anesthetic agents to enhance recovery. He has also been involved in the development of a clinical anterior spinal stimulation system for pain relief. In the past Dr. Erickson has participated in clinical trials on the effects of chymopapain on herniated lumbar discs, and the effects of EC-IC bypass surgery. Current clinical trials involve the implantation of continuous intrathecal morphine infusion system for the treatment of pain due to malignancy; and the implantation of a continuous flow spinal fluid morphine pump for the treatment of spasticity. Dr. Erickson serves on the editorial board of the journal Spine, and is a past president of the Minnesota Society of Neurological Sciences.
